Personal statement by Andrew Ballington-James, director of Just AJD

‘The work of these organisations is very close to my heart. In the case of Free to be Kids, I am a Londoner, born in Lewisham, and have lived and worked in the capital for most of my working life before moving to Kent. At school I struggled to learn because I am profoundly dyslexic. I appreciate just how much the work of Woodpecker Court and Free to be Kids makes to children who can’t benefit from traditional classroom teaching or for whom fun, confidence-boosting outdoor activities away from city life would never be possible.

‘I am also an animal lover. I was fortunate to grow up with dogs, cats and rabbits and today am the doting owner of a cat and a golden retriever. Waggy Tails Rescue, which I’ve personally supported for more than a decade, never turns away an animal in need and has a great track record finding them new homes.’

Woodpecker Court

Woodpecker Court and Woodpecker CIC

Woodpecker Court and Woodpecker CIC work hand in hand to create a seamless pathway of aspiration, opportunity, and real world learning for young people.

As an Ofsted Outstanding post 16 specialist college where ‘learning meets the outdoors,’ Woodpecker Court provides a calm…

…purposeful environment in which students grow in confidence, skills, and independence.

Through Woodpecker Court and Woodpecker CIC those same students put their learning into meaningful action contributing to community projects, developing practical experience, and gaining the real world insight that prepares them for their next steps in life.

From its community farm, where farm based learners support local initiatives, to wider programmes that connect people with nature, both organisations work together to ensure every young person can thrive and make a positive difference.

Waggy Tails

Waggy Tails

Waggy Tails Rescue is a well-established local animal charity based in Dorset that takes in dogs and sometimes other small pets that need a fresh start. Whether an animal has been abandoned, its owner can’t look after them anymore, or they just need some extra care, Waggy Tails provides a safe place where they receive vet care, and plenty of love, and the opportunity to be carefully matched with foster or permanent owners.

No animal is ever put down, and some animals are cared for permanently at its base in Wimborne, not far from Just AJD’s premises. The charity’s mission is to give every animal a real chance at a happy life.

Free To Be Kids

Free To Be Kids

Free to Be Kids is a London charity that works with children and young people who have had a really tough start in life, including challenges like poverty, family difficulties, neglect or homelessness.

Through outdoor residential trips, kids are able to escape the pressures of everyday life, spend time in nature…

…meet animals, build dens, camp under the stars, paddle on lakes and enjoy proper time to play, relax and just be kids again. These experiences are carefully designed to be fun while helping children feel safe, valued and proud of themselves, building their confidence, self esteem, social skills and resilience. This is especially important for kids who often feel left out or misunderstood.

The charity’s three programmes are:

Thrive Outside. These are residential programmes that provide children access to adventure, the outdoors and space away from difficult home circumstances, helping them build confidence, resilience and broadening their horizons.

Journey Programme. This helps older young people facing the highest need take part in challenging outdoor activities to shift negative self-perception.

1:1 mentoring. This is for 10-16 year olds whose childhoods are characterised by trauma. The charity has provided 192 hours of intensive support for 12 months with each session 2-3 hours every fortnight.

Mike Gee, CEO of Free to be Kids, said:

“Being as visible as possible helps Free to Be Kids to showcase its work to new volunteers, funders and supporters and to run to continue to run programmes.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Andrew and Just AJD for their donation of professional signage, banners and photography in support of Free to Be Kids!
The generosity of Just AJD and all of our supporters helps us to continue the work of transforming the mental health of vulnerable London children aged 8-18 through the power of the outdoors.”

Paul Chapman, a volunteer at Waggy Tails, said:

“Andrew and his team have supported Waggy Tails for many years. Andrew regularly donates his personal time in addition to our printing services, and he comperes the charity’s annual auction, one of its most important fundraising events. Just AJD’s long term support and commitment has been fantastic for a small local charity staffed by volunteers.”
